What to Expect During Your Child’s First Week of Preschool

The first week of preschool is a major milestone—for kids and parents! It’s a time full of excitement, nerves, new faces, and big changes. At STEM Child Care, we know how important this transition is, and we’re here to make it as smooth and joyful as possible. Here’s what you can expect in your child’s first week.

  1. Big Emotions (and That’s Okay!)
It’s completely normal for your child to feel anxious or clingy. They may cry during drop-off, and that’s okay. Our nurturing teachers are trained to comfort, distract, and build relationships with each child. Most kids settle in within a few minutes and start playing happily.
  2. A Warm Welcome
Our teachers spend the first week helping each child feel safe and seen. We focus on building connections, learning routines, and getting to know your child’s personality and interests. Your child will be greeted by name, introduced to their classmates, and slowly eased into daily activities.
  3. Gentle Routines
Routines help children feel secure. During the first week, we take time to explain classroom procedures and guide your child through transitions like snack time, circle time, and outdoor play. Repetition is key, and we make it fun!
  4. Lots of Play-Based Learning
Expect your child to come home talking about what they built, painted, or explored. At STEM, our curriculum integrates science, technology, engineering, and math into hands-on activities that feel like play. The first week is full of engaging centers that spark curiosity.
  5. A Few Tears (For Parents, Too!)
Yes, we see you in the car with misty eyes after drop-off! Saying goodbye can be hard, but trust that your child is in caring hands. Feel free to call us or check your Brightwheel app for updates and photos throughout the day.
  6. A Tired Kiddo
The preschool day is exciting and stimulating. Don’t be surprised if your child is extra tired or even a little cranky after school during that first week. A little rest, a snack, and some snuggles usually do the trick.
  7. Growing Independence
Even by the end of the first week, you’ll start to notice small changes—more independence, new friendships, and growing confidence. That’s the magic of preschool!

We’re honored to be part of your child’s journey. The first week is just the beginning of a wonderful adventure in learning and growing together.
