How to Encourage Your Child to Ask Questions and Be Curious

At STEM Child Care, we believe that curiosity is the heart of learning. When children ask questions, they’re not just looking for answers—they’re building confidence, critical thinking skills, and a lifelong love of discovery. In fact, one of the most powerful things parents and educators can do is to nurture that natural spark of wonder.

So how can you encourage your child to ask more questions and stay curious? Here are some simple, effective strategies that work both at home and in the classroom.

1. Model Curiosity Yourself

Children are always watching and learning from the adults around them. Show your own curiosity by asking questions out loud—like “I wonder how birds build their nests” or “What makes the moon look so big tonight?” When children see adults asking questions, they learn that it’s not only okay to wonder—it’s encouraged.

2. Create a Safe Space for Asking Questions

At STEM Child Care, we create an environment where every question is welcomed. Whether it’s a “why,” “how,” or “what if,” questions are celebrated and explored with patience. At home, respond to your child’s questions with interest and enthusiasm. Avoid brushing them off or giving quick answers—take time to explore their thoughts and ask follow-up questions.

3. Encourage Exploration Through Play

Children learn best through hands-on experiences. Open-ended toys like blocks, art supplies, and sensory bins encourage exploration and problem-solving. When your child builds something or notices how water moves, use that as a springboard to ask, “Why do you think that happened?” or “What would happen if we tried it a different way?”

4. Go on Curiosity Walks

Take a walk around your neighborhood, visit a local park, or explore a museum together. Ask your child to point out things they find interesting or puzzling. Encourage them to observe, ask questions, and think aloud. This kind of shared experience not only sparks curiosity—it builds your bond, too.

5. Read Books That Inspire Questions

Choose books with vibrant illustrations, fun facts, or unusual stories that invite wonder. As you read together, pause to ask your child what they think might happen next or how something works. Books about animals, space, the human body, and nature are especially great for encouraging curiosity.

6. Resist the Urge to Provide All the Answers

It’s tempting to jump in with the right answer, but sometimes it’s better to say, “Let’s find out together.” Look up information in a book or online, or try an experiment at home. This teaches your child how to seek answers—and that it’s okay not to know everything.

At STEM Child Care, our classrooms are designed to inspire wonder every day. Through open-ended questions, engaging STEM activities, and nurturing relationships, we encourage our preschoolers to be curious, creative thinkers.
